We are caught in irreversible histories of disturbances to and with our environment. We have actively sought to suppress coexistence, enabling unexpected natural mechanisms of destruction to proliferate. We have enlisted machines to disentangle ourselves and other organisms into alienated resources, thus manufacturing the destruction of the environment that we are fundamentally codependent on. Many of us have adopted cynical world views that we are doomed with no chance of returning to any previous states of coexistence. Trees are thick with them, yet mycelium remain largely invisible to our eyes. Mycelia is not one single entity, but refers to a collection of strands making up the building blocks of what we see and identify as fungi. They occupy spaces between the dead and living, consuming matter yet creating worlds for others. Fungi, over years, break down the most impermeable of structures, offering life-giving chemicals to other agents of life. To quote anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, the world we live in continues to be a patchy landscape with unstable boundaries between what is constructed by us and what constructs us. The project denies the dominant discourse that Man had seized control of earth and fundamentally fixed its trajectory in place; We did not get here alone, and certainly, we cannot reconcile with the messes we made alone. My project aims to enlist other actors in the process, and communicate to others that the small steps of technological and environmental collaborations we take are not just impactful, they are essential. A desolated parking lot site butted against a thinly channelled river is demolished, a river bay is given a chance to restore itself into a wetland. Five rows of housing units sit elevated on piles over the site, allowing a delicate river channel to partially restore its ecosystem. Three walkways extend over the river to attract curious city visitors to explore the hybrid built and unbuilt envionment. Small spaces bleed into one another across floors. Small programs divide into chapters and volumes throughout the building. The programs and systems simultanously integrate and separate the two hopeful establishments attempting to outwit one another. An undulating glass corridor divide offices, but glass walls chosen for modern aesthetics enable both companies to visually eavesdrop on one another. Sound cannot pass through the two offices, but switches redirecting the flow of the HVAC system allow both companies to sample the smell of brewing from one another. The rosin box has never been a generative device of its own accord, always succumbing to predetermined drawings of the printmaker. This project attempts to give agency to the rosin box as a primary image-generating device. Using a process similar to cyanotype and the principles of photo exposure, string and nails rest over a clean copper plate. Rosin is deposited incrementally onto the surface, then fixed in place using a torch. The process is repeated at multiple 50 second-increments until a thick layer of rosin had built up everywhere besides the positive of the image. This architecture does not provide a clean slate for program; rather, it uses structural noise and loudness to animate a space with multiple opportunities for trade, selling, bartering, performance, busking and entertainment. Life on the market streets of the city of Kariakoo, Dar Es Salaam continue in this open structure intended to replace an existing performance centre.
